Below. A member of Canadian Gypsy Group consisting of approx 60 to 80 people visited Peterborough in 1909. This visit was treated with great apprehension by the citizens of the Community. Near the town Line The Men were arrested for vagrancy and held in Jail for approx a week. As a result the Women and Children followed and camped first at the jail and then were moved to a Park on George St. It soon became a Carnival Setting. Both photographers and the Public descended. It came to the point the police had to maintain control to give the Gypsys privacy. After 1 week the men were released and fined $125.00 Canadian. A very hefty sum. They were then ordered to leave the city. but not before they allowed a marriage between members tp be held here. The Local fairground was used and The next day the gypsies left and continued their Ontario tour.
